AFC Women’s Asian Cup: Australia and South Korea Play Out Thrilling 3–3 Draw

By Shakeel ur Rehman – Sydney, Australia

In an electrifying match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the Australia women’s national football team staged a remarkable comeback twice to secure a dramatic 3–3 draw against the South Korea women’s national football team. The Group A encounter took place at Stadium Australia in Sydney, providing fans with a memorable contest full of excitement and attacking football.

Following this result, South Korea finished at the top of Group A and will now face the third-placed team from either Group B or Group C in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, host nation Australia will meet the second-placed team from Group B in the next stage of the tournament.

The match drew a massive crowd of 60,279 spectators at Stadium Australia, setting a new attendance record for the tournament. The previous record of 44,379 fans was set during the opening match when Australia faced the Philippines women’s national football team earlier in the competition.

Australia Start on the Front Foot

The hosts began the match aggressively, pushing forward from the opening minutes. Australia’s captain Sam Kerr had an early chance to give her team the lead, but South Korean goalkeeper Kim Min-jung made an excellent save to deny her.

Shortly afterwards, Australian forward Caitlin Foord attempted a shot after receiving a pass from midfielder Katrina Gorry, but her effort sailed just over the crossbar.

South Korea Strike First

After withstanding Australia’s early pressure, South Korea stunned the home crowd by taking the lead in the 13th minute. Jeon Yu-gyeong made a brilliant run past the Australian defense before delivering a precise pass to Moon Eun-ju. Moon calmly slotted the ball past Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold to give her side a 1–0 advantage.

Australia suffered another setback in the 18th minute when defender Steph Catley was forced to leave the field due to a head injury. She was replaced by Courtney Nevin, which temporarily disrupted Australia’s defensive organization.

Hosts Fight Back

Despite the setback, the Matildas continued pressing forward and eventually found an equalizer in the 32nd minute. A dangerous delivery from Mary Fowler caused confusion in the South Korean defense, allowing Alanna Kennedy to score from close range and level the match at 1–1.

Australia had another opportunity to take the lead during first-half stoppage time, but Caitlin Foord’s shot narrowly missed the target. Moments later, however, Foord produced a brilliant run down the flank before passing the ball to Sam Kerr, who finished confidently into the bottom corner of the net to give Australia the lead.

Dramatic Second Half

The second half continued at an intense pace, with both teams displaying attacking intent. South Korea fought back strongly and managed to regain the lead at one stage, putting Australia under pressure once again.

However, the host side showed resilience and determination, equalizing once more to make it 3–3. Australia’s ability to come from behind twice highlighted their fighting spirit and determination in front of the home crowd.

In the end, the match concluded in a thrilling 3–3 draw, providing fans with one of the most exciting matches of the tournament so far. The dramatic encounter not only entertained the record-breaking crowd but also set the stage for an intriguing knockout phase in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
